My First Introduction To The Law Of Attraction
My first introduction to the law of attraction was when I was in college. I was working full time for the federal government and part time at a local piano bar to help make ends meet. Financially, I was struggling. I took out student loans, but that didn’t even cover all of my tuition let alone books. There was literally nothing left over at the end of each month. Actually, it was worse than that because I was racking up credit card debt along the way. Life was stressful to say the least.
At the time, it was hard to envision a life where I could go shopping without fretting over every penny and I was jealous of all the people around me who didn’t have to think twice. I wanted to be able to shop like everyone else, but the bills were piling up. So shopping just wasn’t a priority for me at the time.
One day, while I was working at the piano bar I was talking to one of the waitresses and she mentioned a pair of boots that I should check out because they were cute and on sale. As soon as she said it, I shot back “I can’t afford that”. Another waitress walking past said, “don’t say that or you’ll never be able to”. For whatever reason, that one comment really resonated with me. From that moment on I started to try and reframe how I spoke about money. It was a random conversation, but it really struck a cord and stayed with me all these years.
Fast forward several of years: I graduated from college, got married, and had my first kid. We bought a house. It was a little outside of the Central West End in an area the city was trying to gentrify. The house was beautiful, but the neighborhood was questionable. Ali was stuck working overnights and I was stuck at home alone with Nadia. This is probably a good time to mention that someone tried to break into our house a few weeks prior. It was 2am, I was up feeding Nadia, and suddenly the alarm started blaring. My heart was racing and I couldn’t run up the stairs fast enough. Someone broke the basement window trying to get in. The cops came, and had to search our whole house with their guns drawn to ensure that the person wasn’t in the house.
Anyways, it was the middle of the night and Nadia woke up for her night time feeding. Since Ali was working I needed something to keep my mind off the fact that Nadia and I were home alone. So, I turned on Netflix. I was flipping through and came across The Secret. The cover picture reminded me of one of my favorite books, Da Vinci Code so of course I had to watch it.
My heart was raced as I watched, and little butterflies fluttered in my stomach. For me, it was a moment of clarity. I had been using visualization my whole life. At the time I didn’t realize that’s what I was doing. I thought I was just daydreaming. But, in hindsight everything that was ever important to me I would incessantly daydream about it. It was almost as if I had little mini movies playing in my head. I could vividly see exactly what I wanted to happen. I couldn’t wait to tell my husband about the movie.
Unfortunately, Ali wasn’t impressed. It didn’t align with his medical training and he thought it was all woo woo. Despite his mockery, I started watching The Secret every time I felt down. I had postpartum depression so it was quite frequent. It was one of the main things that pulled me through the depression. Each time I watched it, I was drawn further into the concept of the law of attraction. I knew there was something to this.
Implementing The Law Of Attraction
I began consciously implementing the strategies: ask, believe receive. I visualized daily, and I started my own vision board. Changing the way I felt about money became a top priority, not just how spoke about it, but how I felt about it. I started reminding myself to be grateful for the things I already had whenever I started to feel jealous. Now, none of this was easy. Especially changing how I felt about money. I still catch myself tightening up when I’m talking about money occasionally. The point is, my life has drastically changed since watching The Secret.
The Secret was just the starting point on my quest for information on the law of attraction. It’s a good starting place, but to really understand it, I had to read more books, listen to podcasts, and even watch additional movies. Whenever I find something related to the law of attraction, I devour it. The profound affect the law of attraction has had on my life is the reason I want to help you shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance. I believe we can all attain the life of our dreams.
